These are trying economic times indeed for our nation and the world. What began in the spring of 2007 as a Wall Street driven sub-prime mortgage problem has ballooned into a global recession. With the benefit of hindsight, it is now clear that the decision of our public policy makers to allow Lehman Brothers to fail last summer had a myriad of unintended consequences. That decision magnified Wall Street’s problem into a global financial crisis. Simultaneously, our nation’s economy is struggling with a “reverse feedback loop” of credit losses leading to business and family spending cuts, which in turn lead to more credit losses.

Our region is faring better than many parts of the nation. Home values have declined, but less so than many other parts of the country. The business climate here is fragile, yet reasonably stable.
